The Challenge
A temporary power solution was required to support the installation and commissioning of multiple guillotine dampers on site. The setup needed to be both safe and robust, while allowing flexibility for testing and adjustments during the commissioning phase.
The project also required careful cable routing along an external fence line, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding operations while maintaining full compliance with electrical safety standards.
The Solution
CJ Timms Electrical provided a tailored temporary power installation designed to meet the site’s operational requirements.
A 125amp socket was installed in advance of the first guillotine damper assembly, forming the foundation of the temporary supply. From this, a bespoke 125amp extension lead was manufactured to distribute power from the office location to the damper positions. The cable was securely routed along the fence line using purpose-supplied brackets and fixings, ensuring both stability and protection throughout its run.
Power was extended via a 125amp supply to an inverter, with cabling installed from the inverter to the 60kW motor to enable damper operation. All associated wiring for the damper systems was completed, including:
- A 12-core control cable installed between the inverter and motor controller
- A 24-core cable for limit and thermal switches
- A 15-core cable to simulate control room signals, enabling damper operation during commissioning and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
All cables for the four damper sets were carefully measured, cut, and prepared to ensure accurate installation and efficient connection. The first damper set was fully wired, establishing a template for the remaining units.
To support commissioning and testing, a remote test cable was installed, allowing integration with a remote test box. This enabled safe and controlled testing procedures without the need for repeated manual intervention at the dampers themselves.
Earthing cables were also installed in line with end-user specifications, ensuring full compliance with safety requirements.

The Outcome
Following final connections, the system was safely energised and fully tested. The damper operated as intended, with all functions performing reliably under test conditions.
Guidance was provided on limit switch configuration and torque settings, ensuring the client team could confidently manage adjustments and ongoing operation.
The result was a safe, efficient, and adaptable temporary power solution, enabling smooth commissioning while maintaining high standards of workmanship and compliance throughout.
