Avoid an Electrical Meltdown This Christmas: 5 Simple Checks Before the Holidays

As the year winds down and the festive season approaches, many factories, warehouses, and offices across Derbyshire are preparing for a well-earned break. But before you switch off the lights and lock the doors, there’s one thing worth adding to your Christmas checklist, your electrical system.

At C J Timms Electrical Services Ltd, we’ve seen how a little preparation before the holidays can prevent big headaches in the New Year. From frozen circuits to forgotten switches, here are five simple electrical checks to keep your business safe, efficient, and ready for a smooth start in January.

      1. Turn Off Non-Essential Equipment

It’s easy to forget about machinery, fans, or chargers left running over the holidays. Equipment that stays powered can waste energy or even overheat if faults occur when no one’s around.

Quick fix: Before closing up, make a list of what can be safely powered down; machinery, computers, lighting circuits, and charging stations. Label key isolators so your team knows what to switch off and what must stay running (like security systems or refrigeration).

      2. Test Emergency Lighting and Fire Alarms

Empty buildings still need protection. A dark corridor or faulty alarm could spell trouble if there’s an incident during the shutdown.

Quick fix: Carry out a quick emergency lighting test and confirm that alarm systems are operational. If you notice flickering lights or unresponsive call points, report them immediately. December is the perfect time to schedule a service before staff return.

      3. Check Heaters and Festive Decorations

Extra portable heaters and Christmas lights are common in December and so are overloaded sockets! These seasonal additions often draw more power than expected.

      Quick fix:

      • Use extension leads responsibly (never daisy-chain).
      • Ensure heaters and decorative lights are PAT tested and switched off overnight.
      • Avoid placing cables under rugs or near flammable materials.

A little care keeps the office festive and fire-safe.

      4. Inspect Your Distribution Boards and Circuits

End-of-year downtime is ideal for a quick inspection of your electrical panels. Dust, debris, or loose covers can indicate issues, especially in high-traffic industrial environments.

Quick fix: Look for signs of overheating, scorch marks, or tripped breakers. If your site hasn’t had an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) recently, consider booking one for January. It’s a smart way to start the year safely and in compliance with BS 7671 standards.

      5. Schedule Preventive Maintenance for the New Year

Christmas shutdowns provide the perfect window for maintenance work, when machinery is idle and disruption is minimal.

Quick fix: Plan any preventive maintenance, lighting upgrades, or electrical inspections during your downtime. This way, your site reopens with systems that are reliable, efficient, and ready for the year ahead.

      Stay Bright, Safe, and Merry

A few quick checks before you hang up your hard hat can make all the difference. By keeping your electrical systems safe and maintained, you’ll avoid unwelcome surprises when you return in January.
